Local artist and retired art professor, Derby Ulloa, was joined by JTC Running Board of Directors member, Douglas Tillett, at the awards ceremony of the Jacksonville Mayor’s Hispanic American Advisory Board. Professor Ulloa received the 2018 Arts and Culture Hispanic Leadership Award.
Ulloa was commissioned by JTC Running in 2002 to create the first River Runner statue which was donated to the city by the Club. The male runner was installed at the site of the start line of the first River Run on the North Bank Riverwalk at the foot of Newnan Street. In 2011, the Club asked Ulloa to create a female River Runner to complete the celebration of Jacksonville’s premier running event.
Both statues are in temporary storage awaiting completion of the reconstruction of the Riverwalk later this year at which time they will be returned to public display.
The 41st Gate River Run will start at 8:00 am Saturday, March 10.
