50 Years and Still Running!
The first Summer Beach Run was held in 1965 when the Beatles were taking the US by storm. Long hair with long sideburns was the rage, and we had not yet put a man on the moon. The first event consisted of 25 to 30 runners who were taken by truck to the starting line at Hannah Park. There were only men running the race that year. Most were high school cross country runners getting ready for the season. The race is those days was a straight shot down the beach to the Jacksonville Beach Lifeguard Station. The Seawalk Pavilion would not be built for another 40 years.
To commemorate the 50 birthday of the Summer Beach Run, JTC Running has commissioned the creation of a one-time only medal for the Summer Beach Run. The medal will be given to all finishers of the 5 mile run. After the conclusion of the run, a huge post-race celebration will be held featuring a live band, free beer, and tacos from Tijuana Flats.
Devil Take the Hindmost is a series of elimination races for high school cross country athletes:
** We will have at least 2 girls/womens races and at least 2 boys/mens races
** The course will be all on grass
** Each loop will be 500m approx — everyone in the JV race stays in for at least 4 laps (2000m) and everyone in the varsity race stays in for 6 laps (3000m) – (with the exception of any runner who is just too far off the pace; we will pull him/her sooner)
** After that, we will have the option of eliminating the runners who are falling off the pack. That option could range from not eliminating anyone on the 4th lap (because they are all still together) to eliminating up to ten on the 6th lap (because they have fell too far back from the main pack).
The number we eliminate will depend on the number of the main pack and the number of stragglers who have fell off from the main pack.
** As the “race” unfolds the goal is to eliminate runners who fall off the main pack until we are left with a small group – anywhere from maybe 3-6 going into last lap.
** The JV races will end after 8 laps (4k approx) and the Varsity race will end after 10 laps (5k approx)
** We will have a zone area at the finish line that the leaders must remain in that zone area until the last runner has crossed a mark which will be about 100m or so before finish line (goal posts at San Jose side of field) – as soon as the last runner has crossed that marker the leaders can begin the next lap.
***** However, we have the right to change and make up rules as we go along – because in an event like this we need to be somewhat flexible.
Schedule – first race – Girls JV (openwomen) to begin at around 6:30 pm; next race – Boys JV (openmen) will hopefully start around 6:45 pm and will be followed Girls Varsity (open) and finally Boys varsity/open
** Coaches: please try to have no less than 5 runners in varsity race (hopefully 7 or more) – one year the numbers in the girls varsity race was too low and I would like that number (this year in girls varsity) to be at least 25 .
The day-long event will feature live music, dynamic speakers, cooking demonstrations, beer garden, kids’ zone, pie-eating contest, exceptional freebies, raffles, scavenger hunt and much more! The best of the best local, sustainable, eco-friendly, compassionate, organic, healthy and humane organizations and businesses will come together to elevate the consciousness in Jacksonville.

JTC Running active and prospective members will gather after the Festival of Lights 5k at the 1st Place Sports San Marco store for refreshments and good cheer. A special order holiday tree ornament will be for sale to members for $5.00 and given FREE to each new member joining the Club that night!

Celebrate National Running Day on Wednesday, June 3 with a 5k fun run! The entry fee is a $10 donation to Marathon High, a local nonprofit program that challenges at-risk teens to train for a 13.1 mile half-marathon in order to develop positive futures. All entrants will enjoy free beer, hot dogs and burgers after the run. Click HERE to signup!
